An empowering feminist music playlist inspired by a scene from The Handmaid’s Tale on Hulu.
Yes! I’m one of those people who honestly believes music can change the world. I know, playing a song won’t end world hunger or fix the environment but I do believe the right song at the right moment can change everything. I’ve been curating personal music playlists for about a year. Open my apple music app and you’ll find 5 or 6 scrolls worth of playlists to my reluctant gym workouts, frustrating writing sessions, long summer car rides, and on, and on, and on.
Music cashes in it’s contribution to the world with the unique currency of understanding. You listen to the right song and suddenly you don’t have to feel lonely, heartbroken, or nostalgic all by yourself. The breakup up is heartbreaking but someone understands, the work out is hard but “You can do this!”, the weekend trip isn’t just a weekend trip, it’s an epic adventure. It’s extraordinary, the power of a single song!
I was making playlists that helped define that feeling of walking through a nearly vacant city at night or falling in love with someone new. I’d ask myself “what does it sound like to embark on a new adventure or to get angry and lash out?” Somewhere along the line, I had the realization that these playlists weren’t just for me, they were for the world.
“I Aint No Hollaback Girl!” – Gwen Stafani
This particular playlist is inspired by a scene from season 2 of Handmaid’s Tale; June is remembering a moment shared between her and her mother. The two women are riding in the car, Gwen Stafani’s ‘Hollaback Girl’ rings through the radio and June’s mother starts singing “that’s my sh*t, that’s my sh*t”. This surprises June but she joins in. It’s a memorable moment for June and it’s one of my favorite scenes of season 2.
Note: June’s mother was a women’s rights activist before the rise of Gilead.
I filled this playlist with songs that help boost confidence and speak out about issues women are still facing today. These songs help place me in a positive mindset to achieve my daily goals. I hope this playlist makes you feel like you can do anything because you can. that’s my message to the world today “YOU CAN DO ANYTHING!”.
So, yes, I truly believe music can change the world. I listen to the perfect song at the right moment and suddenly I don’t feel so alone. Maybe someone, somewhere is listening to the same song and they understand, maybe understanding is the key to everything. It’s been music that’s brought me this far and it will be music that keeps me going. Happy Listening.
