Some time ago, I was scrolling through Twitter moments when I saw a report about a photo challenge that challenged people to take beautiful photos in craft stores. The #HobbyLobbyChallenge or #MichaelsChallenge sprung from a series of photos taken in Hobby Lobby. I thought the #CraftstoreChallenge was kind of cool, I love the idea of getting creative with unusual spaces!
Initially, I made plans to do a shoot in Michaels but my anxiety got to me. My camera is a DSLR which means it isn’t exactly the least noticeable thing in the world. I was worried that people weren’t actually allowed to take photos in the stores and I didn’t want to pull attention in my direction with a giant camera.
I put the photo challenge on hold and then my older sister came into town. She hadn’t been to Walmart in the many months since she moved out of the country. When she arrived it was late but we took a little trip to Walmart. We somehow found ourselves in a vacant craft aisle with an iPhone 6s and tons of fake flowers. Que the impromptu photo shoot!
I hate to sound all soppy but, it had been 6 long years since we were all face to face! It was nice to capture that moment even if only through a posed, impromptu, iPhone, photo shoot. These photos of my sisters are among some of my favorite photos taken all year. I actually enjoyed getting creative at Walmart. This shoot was fun and I encourage every single one of you to do something creative that takes you outside of your comfort zone. What’s the most spontaneous thing you’ve ever done in public?
